Proof Coins Are the finest quality coins produced by the United States Mint
“The term “proof” refers to the coin’s finish. Proof blanks are specially treated, hand-polished and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice. The coins are then carefully packaged to showcase and preserve their exceptional finish. These coins are struck at least twice, giving the coin a frosted, sculpted foreground for a glamorous shine, a defined, intricate design, and a mirror-like background.” -The United States Mint
The San Francisco Mint is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary for producing stunning proof coins at its facility located in the bustling Market District of San Francisco. In 1968, exactly one year after “The Summer of Love” consumed the Golden Gate City, the iconic mint began producing “S” marked United States Proof sets. Each “United States Proof Set” came with a 1968 1¢ Penny, 5¢ Nickel, 10¢ Dime, 25¢ Quarter and a 40% silver Kennedy Half Dollar, all encased in a handsome proof coin holder case. These were the first proof-finished coins ever produced by
the San Francisco Mint.
